Determining Your Values and Priorities and Setting Life Goals

Would You Leave for a Trip Without Knowing Where You Were Going?

What if I told you I was sending you on a long vacation, but I won’t tell you where you are going until you get there? I could be sending you skiing or hiking through the hills of Pennsylvania, sightseeing through Europe, or to a dream beach vacation.

It’s time to prepare your family for this secret trip. Would you know what to pack? How long should you ask off work? How much spending money will you bring along?

Sound ridiculous? It is! You wouldn’t leave for a trip without first deciding where to go.

Would You Take a Car Trip to a Far–way Place Without Consulting a Map?

Okay, let’s say you know your destination. Would you hop in your car and take off without knowing which route you need to take to get there? You could end up in a completely different place, or you could get to where you wanted to go but be so late that you miss your reservations.

Of course, you would never do that either. First, you would decide where you want to go and then you would figure out the best route to get there. You would research what activities you should do during your stay, and ask friends what you should make sure to bring along. That’s good sense.

That’s good planning.

A Road Map for Your Life

But, how many of us go through our entire lives, just wondering? Have you ever thought about what you want your life to look like in 20 years? What values and priorities you hope to instill in your children? Have you ever sat down and really thought about what it will take to get you there?

How many people get to the twilight of their lives and must live with their regrets? How many parents realize too late that they have failed to pass on their values to their children?

If you don’t map out where you want to be in 5, 10, 20 years, how will you know if you are even headed in the right direction?

That’s why I created the Values and Priorities Worksheet and Life Map.

The Values and Priorities Worksheet helps us think through what our values are, how to prioritize them with our actions, and identify what time wasters may be keeping us from living out our priorities.

You can download the FREE worksheet here.

The Life Map walks you through creating a road map for your life by visualizing what your life to look like in 20 years, and then working backward to set immediate, short term and long term goals to get you there.
